With very few exceptions humans have evolved as a social society. We have become specialised in our daily tasks and we trade with others of a different specialism. It is a trade off: group safety and skill sharing for personal space and complete independence. We are now inter-dependent and must be able to function with, in and as a team to live and work in our society successfully.

This is the aim of any group working together. Working as a team is more effective and often more efficient than acting as a group of separate individuals. Weaknesses are balanced by strengths, problems can be solved by varying perspectives and workloads are eased by complementary skills.
Making a team work effectively takes some initial effort. It helps if you are aware that teams go through stages (forming, storming, norming and performing) which influence their performance and team member satisfaction.
