don't just react – respond like a STAR

When you are feeling overwhelmed or about to be overwhelmed by an emotional reaction, try the following (this is developed from the Davisville Middle School STAR program – if it works for kids, it can work for grown-ups).

Stop

listen to what is happening (within you and around you).

Think

how are you really feeling? – recognise your automatic reactions. What's really important about this situation and your reactions?

Anticipate

how would you like the situation to turn out? Which of your reactions need to be expressed?

Respond

choose how to turn your reactions into a response. Choose the right words, tone of voice and body posture.
